Afghanistan, May 2012

Heavy rains caused flash floods in the northern Afghan province of Saripul just a few days ago. A WFP team visited the village of Asia Abad to see how people were doing and what they needed. Many villagers had lost their homes and also their livelihoods - such as the crops in the fields, or their livestock. WFP is distributing High-Energy Biscuits and Plumpy’Doz, a ready-to-eat fortified food for children, as a measure to limit the risk of children becoming malnourished during these difficult times.

ChildFund’s family income-generating program in Indonesia aims to help families better respond to their children’s health, nutrition and education needs. We form an agreement with the beneficiaries, whereby each family agrees to allocate 25% of the weaving business profits to a savings account for the children.
Yustina, a 32-year-old mother of four children, is one of the beneficiaries of the weaving program. She and her husband work as farmers. But the uncertainty of the weather made it difficult for them to earn money from their crops and they had difficulty feeding their children.
Now Yustina can earn money from weaving, selling three to four traditional woven items per month at $10 to $30 each. Yustina already had skill in weaving, as it’s a cultural tradition for women in her community to weave. What she did not have was materials, and that’s where ChildFund came to help. We provided bundles of thread and other items. “The weather is becoming more uncertain. Weaving helps my family a lot,” says Yustina.

Young Entrepreneurs Emerging on African Land

Butterfly Young Social Entrepreneurs Africa is identifying talent and positivity in Ugandan villages and capitalizing on it.  In a country where young people have dreams and aspirations that are often stifled by financial instability and corruption, this project identifies potential and cultivates it.  Butterfly Young Social Entrepreneurs offers training and opportunities for teens that allow them to make an impact in their communities and create social change.

Butterfly Young Social Entrepreneurs services teens from 12-18 and develop them into leaders that can circle back and make an impact on other young people in their villages.  The organization recognizes that peer relationships create the most impact and put the power into the hands of young people as they seek to make a difference in the community.

The Butterfly Project focuses on a wide range of skills including technology, confidence, creativity, academics and entrepreneurship.  Variety in skills training maximizes the potential of the youth and molds them into well-rounded individuals prepared to become changemakers in the world around them.

The education efforts of this program are valuable and have a huge impact on Africa and the rest of the world.   To run this program and give teens the opportunities they need to make a difference, financial obligations must be met.  The Butterfly Project has a tipping point goal of $7,500, which will provide funds needed to pay for rent and utilities for the training center, internet access, laptops and food.   Butterfly Young Social Entrepreneurs has been working so hard and has done such an amazing job raising the capital necessary to fund this powerful and life-changing project—help give it the push it needs to get over the campaign tipping point.
